How it works

  • Step 1 Tell us what you need and how to reach you. About a minute, no account.
  • Step 2 Joe reads it himself and replies directly. Nobody else receives it.
  • Step 3 You get a short call to talk it through. Go ahead with something, ask more, or do nothing.

This is a free information site, not a council or the VOA. When you send an enquiry, Joe, who runs this site, reads it and replies to you himself; no rating agent or firm receives your details and you pay nothing to ask. It carries no advertising, no sponsored placement and no affiliate links. Every multiplier and relief is quoted from GOV.UK, the VOA or the council that publishes it, with a link and the date we read it. Nothing here is tax advice; your council's bill is the figure that counts.

Every provider below was read on its own page through our fetch box, and the row says what that page published on the day we read it. 2 of 22 publish a figure; the rest are listed too, because how many will not quote a number is the most useful thing about this market. Nothing here is a quote for your job: it is what other people advertise.

Every row is a verbatim sentence read from the named source's own page through our fetch service on the date shown, hash-pinned to the stored read (the sha of the page's visible text; the raw page is mirrored to R2). 2 of the 22 named sources that could be read published a usable figure; 20 published none and are recorded as not published, never filled in; 1 could not be read (blocked, dead or unreachable) and count nowhere. The headline figures (median, minimum, maximum, quartiles) are over ONE figure per source for each breakdown it prices, in pence (a source's median where its page yielded several accepted sentences for one breakdown), so a page that gives figures for several breakdowns gives one for each and N counts 8 figures, never sentences; 173 candidate sentence(s) were refused by a reviewer with the reason recorded. The fuller derivation this dataset is chartered to grow into (not yet what the figures above are; they are each source's own published figure as read): per nation and rateable value band the multiplier, each relief (RHL multiplier eligibility, pubs and live music venues relief, transitional relief and its supplement, Supporting Small Business, small business rate relief; Scotland's RHL and licensed hospitality reliefs and poundages; Wales's food and drink hospitality relief), the order they apply in and the bill they produce for a worked rateable value
